Hundreds of Corey Haim’s friends and relatives embraced and held hands as they arrived at a Toronto funeral home Tuesday to remember the fallen teen icon with a private ceremony described as being full of tears and laughter.

Several fans stood outside the chapel to pay their respects to the former heartthrob, best known for starring in a string of ‘80s films including Lucas, The Lost Boys and License to Drive.

Haim’s family asked for privacy while they gathered in the wake of his sudden death last week in Burbank, Calif., but that didn’t stop more than a dozen reporters and fans from gathering in front of the chapel.

“Some people might say it’s a little silly, you didn’t know the person,” said 31-year-old fan Dan Pigeau, who drove about an hour from his home in Oshawa, Ont., to visit the funeral home.

“It doesn’t matter. You watch the person’s movies, you watch the person’s TV shows, you listen to a person’s music and it becomes a part of your life. To me, it’s kind of like a part of my childhood died. At 31, I still watch the guy’s movies. I still love The Lost Boys.”

The baby-faced actor died in hospital last week with an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs. He was 38.

In recent years Haim spoke openly about a lengthy battle with drug addiction, but it was not known what role drugs may have played in his death.

The funeral service included speeches from Haim’s best friend, an aunt and a cousin, said Maytal Kotler, who said she was a distant relative.

“It was very touching,” said Kotler. “There was some laughter, a lot of crying.”

Friend Heather Leikam, 31, a former neighbour who met Haim in 2001, said before the memorial that his mother Judy has been a yu gi oh gx cards “pillar” of strength.

Tom Roberts, the North Side stride pianist, will lead a concert Satuday at the Allegheny Unitarian-Universalist Church that will celebrate the beginning of spring.

The event, put together by pastor David McFarland, also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the church.

Roberts, who will be accompanied by his wife, clarinetist Susanne Ortner, hopes this concert is the beginning of series. He’d like to emulate the shows reed player Paul Winter did in New York City that celebrated the seasons and other natural events.

The pianist says McFarland will sing with him and his wife and, in future concerts, he hopes to be joined by other North Side musicians.

Music begins at 7:30 p.m. at the church at 416 W. North Ave. Admission is a suggested $15. Details: 412-322-4261.
